Pop legend Boy George says family trips down to the Kent coast makes him happier than winning music awards.

The Culture Club frontman, who has just released a new album with the band after 19 years, made the comments after returning home from Australia where he was a judge on talent show The Voice.

He told the Guardian: “Little, mundane things are what make you truly happy.

"It’s never like getting a Grammy. Yes, of course those things are beautiful, but it’s always being on holiday in Margate with your family. Just mad little things.”

It isn't the first time the DJ has spoken about the seaside town after he arranged to meet a seriously ill Margate teen in 2015.

Poppy Chatfield arrived at Planet Hollywood in London for an exclusive meet and greet with the Karma Chameleon singer organised by children’s charity, Rays of Sunshine.

The now 16-year-old has Williams syndrome - a developmental disorder that affects many parts of the body – and was delighted to spend some one-to-one time with her idol, asking about his life and career.

Poppy’s mum Annelli said the singer went to great lengths to make her dreams come true: “Boy George really pulled out all the stops to make Poppy feel special.

“It was a day I don’t think Poppy or the family will ever forget, she said.”

Boy George said: “When I heard about Poppy’s wish I didn’t hesitate to make it come true.

"It was an absolute pleasure to meet her and I had a lot of fun getting to know her.

“She is a really inspiring and brave girl and it was great to be able to be a part of something and help Rays of Sunshine put a smile on her face.”
