Car plunges over cliff in Cliff Road, Birchington

Three teenage girls remain in hospital today after a car carrying five people plunged over a cliff in Birchington.

The trio - two aged 17 and one aged 16 - had to be cut out of the vehicle that fell 30ft in Cliff Road.

They were taken to Ashford's William Harvey Hospital after suffering injuries including back and neck pain as well as a cut to the head.

Fire crews, including a specialist team from Deal, were called at 9.10pm on Saturday and found the car on its roof at the bottom of the cliff.

Four female passengers and a male driver were in the vehicle when it left the road.

The driver and one of the passengers managed to get out of the car before rescuers arrived, while three others remained trapped.

They were freed by firefighters using air bags and cutting equipment.

The victims were treated at the scene by ambulance crews before being taken to Ashford's William Harvey hospital with injuries that are not thought to be life-threatening.

The 20 year-old driver was arrested at the scene, but released without charge a short time later.

Police are continuing to investigate how the car came off the road.
