A motion to tackle racism and help shape an anti-racist community has been backed by councillors.

The pledge was made at a full meeting of Thanet District Council after a motion was proposed by Cllr Aram Rawf (Lab) to support local groups in their work to fight racism.

It was seconded by Cllr Mark Hopkinson and agreed by councillors, and will now be considered by cabinet members.

The motion includes creating a task force to oversee work in stamping out racism.

Cllr Rawf said: "The motion asks for the council to acknowledge and support the work of local groups such as Calling Time on Racism, the People Dem Collective and Everyday Racism.

"It also asks for the council to build a campaign to mark a cultural shift toward businesses taking a more active role in shaping an anti-racist community calling on the experience of these local groups."
