A blaze near a multi-storey car park is under investigation as firefighters believe it may have been started deliberately.

Crews were called at 8.06pm yesterday to extinguish a blaze in the roof space of a four-storey building in Prince's Street.

The building was undergoing work to convert it into flats.

Fire service spokesman Mark Roberts said: "Crews wearing breathing apparatus had to force their way into the property and cut away a lot of material to make sure the fire was properly extinguished with a hose reel jet.

"There are no reports of any injuries and the cause is thought to have been deliberate, so information has been passed to Kent Police."

They left the scene at 9.33pm.
