A Tesco superstore damaged in high winds yesterday will remain closed until Wednesday.

Sections of the roof of the supermarket in Margate Road, Broadstairs, were ripped off, forcing the company to evacuate the building.

A press spokesman for Tesco said today the Extra store is "temporarily closed", adding: "We are currently carrying out urgent repair works to ensure the roof is secure so that we can reopen the store to customers as soon as possible."

The store was damaged yesterday morning as 65mph winds battered the county.

A power cut at the same time affected thousands of properties in Thanet, but power was restored within 35 minutes.
