Thanet: Dog walkers urged to take care on beaches

By: Emma Grafton-Williams

Dog walkers should be vigilant over the next few days due to reports of palm oil on Thanet beaches.

Thanet council have received unconfirmed reports but have urged dog walkers to be careful while they continue to investigate.

Palm oil is not dangerous to humans but is deadly to dogs.

Suspected palm oil was found washed up on Folkestone beaches earlier this year. Picture courtesy of Folkestone Coastguard.

It is grown across the world and used mainly in food, soaps, shampoos and biofuels.

The white waxy substance forms in lumps on the beach and is highly toxic to animals - causing serious illness or death.
