Police arrived in Church Street with a dog unit to detain a 45-year-old man from Rochester.

Photos show officers holding the man on the ground during the arrest yesterday afternoon.

He was arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drink and/or drugs.

But he was later released without charge as police said the case "did not meet the evidential test".

Police, who were called at 1.40pm, say no serious injuries were reported.

A woman was thought to be a passenger in the car when it smashed into the old gatehouse.

Witnesses say the damaged car did begin to drive off but only got as far as a speed hump 50 yards away.

Police enquiries into the incident are continuing.
