Tracey Emin's controversial artwork My Bed has been sold at auction for a whopping £2.2m.

The notorious installation, which includes empty vodka bottles, cigarette butts and used underwear, was estimated to sell for around £1 million at Christie's.

But it smashed all estimations, fetching more than £2m - as the artist watched on.

Tracey Emin's iconic artwork My Bed was put up for auction recently

Created in 1998, it was exhibited at the Tate Gallery in 1999 as one of the shortlisted works for the Turner Prize, although it eventually lost out to artist-turned-film director Steve McQueen.

The artwork generated considerable media furore, particularly over the fact that the bedsheets were stained and the floor had items from the artist's room, such as condoms, a pair of knickers and everyday objects, including a pair of slippers.

It was said to be in the state Margate artist Emin claimed it had been after she stayed in it for days during a depression following a relationship breakdown.

Christie's said that, with buyer's premium, My Bed went for £2,546,500, which is a world record for Emin at auction.
