The “eyesore” site of a former pub is set to be transformed into a council housing development.

Plans have been unveiled to build four family homes and a block of 13 flats on land at the former Dane Valley Arms in Margate.

Thanet District Council (TDC) has also launched a separate bid for 12 houses in nearby Tomlin Drive.

The public is now being asked for its views on both developments.

The first would involve the regeneration of the old pub site in Dane Valley Road, which has been plagued by graffiti, vandalism and arson.

The land was once home to the Dane Valley Arms, which was demolished in 2016 due to its unsafe condition.

Planning documents state: “This council-owned site has been identified for redevelopment to provide additional affordable housing.

“The redevelopment aims to regenerate the current area, adding to and enhancing the sustainable and cohesive community.

“Our end goal is to create a development that we can all be proud of and that enhances the site for new and existing residents equally.”

The former pub site was earmarked for housing in TDC’s 2020 Local Plan, but the land in Tomlin Drive was not.

The land is already occupied by seven apartment blocks, and the council hopes to build 12 new family houses among them.

It wants to develop an existing parking area and land once occupied by garages before they were knocked down due to contamination.

A new survey is “likely needed to ensure there is no asbestos in the ground”.

TDC says: “There will also be improved landscaping and the creation of a communal garden area for the new build and existing Thanet District Council blocks at the site.

“We aim to regenerate the current site, improve the parking and landscaping, and enhance the area for existing residents.”

Public consultations on both developments are taking place today from 5.30pm to 7.30pm at 115 Millmead Rd in Margate.
