Developers are hoping to erect a "landmark" five-storey building with flats, a cafe and a cliff-top restaurant on the Kent seafront.

The proposal has been submitted by a firm hoping to transform the site of a former cafe located right by the beach in Ramsgate .

The Western Undercliff Cafe is a single-storey building with a roof terrace, which sits at the foot of a cliff.

The building operated as a beach cafe until 2014, when a burst water pipe forced it to close.

If given the go-ahead from Thanet District Council, developer Western Undercliff Ltd will demolish the existing cafe building.

It would then building a five-storey building feature a cafe with an outdoor seating area, along with a public bathroom on the ground floor.

The first, second and third floors would comprise eight self-contained flats - two three-beds, and six two-beds.

Meanwhile the fourth floor would be home to a "cliff-top" restaurant.

In planning documents, developers say the site "can be used to deliver a truly distinctive landmark building at the entrance to the port and a boost to local tourism facilities through the replacement café".

They add that the fourth-floor restaurant "will be a landmark destination and attraction to the Ramsgate area, bringing people into the town".

"The location for the restaurant has been chosen for its sea-front location and accessibility to the beach," the documents continue.

"The investment to create a restaurant seeking to attract visitors because of its breathtaking views of the seafront would add diversity and choice to the restaurant market within Ramsgate, to the

benefit of the town itself."

The plans are available for comment on Thanet District Council's planning website under reference F/TH/20/0920 .
