Windows smashed and shops damaged in Station Road, Birchington

A man was arrested after a whirlwind of damage was caused in a street.

Several shop windows were smashed and objects were thrown at passing cars and pedestrians.

Damage was also caused inside a number of shops at Station Road, Birchington.

Kent Police said that they attended at 8.30am today and arrested a 32-year-old man on suspicion of criminal damage, theft and affray.

A spokesman said this afternoon: "The man is alleged to have smashed several shop windows in the area and thrown objects at passing cars and pedestrians.

"He is also reported to have caused damage inside a number of shops.

"He remains in custody while enquiries continue."

The Co-operative confirmed that its foodstore was one of the businesses targeted.

A spokesman said: “Police were called due to anti-social behaviour when an intruder entered the store at around 8:30am. We would like to thank the police for the speed of their response.

" The store re-opened to serve the community at around midday."
