One of Kent's main hospitals was plunged into darkness due to a power cut.

Officials confirmed parts of the Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital in Margate were left with no electricity on Wednesday evening.

A spokesman for East Kent Hospitals said: "The affected area includes the hospital’s emergency department.

The A&E department is among the areas of the QEQM affected

"The hospital's contingency plans are in place to keep patients safe until power is restored.

"The hospital is asking the public not to attend the emergency department and to keep ambulance services free for emergency life-threatening conditions.

"If you are concerned about someone’s health but it’s not an emergency, please call NHS 111."

Power was restored shortly before 11pm.
