A huge, colourful mural of a Canadian marine scientist has been painted on the side of a house.

The artwork was completed by Scotty Brave on the corner of Margate High Street and Churchfields last Friday.

It depicts Canadian oceanographer Amanda Vincent, who founded Project Seahorse, a platform for conservation and scientific research into the animal.

The mural is part of Rise Up Residency, a collection of paintings which went on show last year. Creator Scotty was injured at the time but returned to Margate to complete his piece.

The 47-year-old said: “I wanted to do the project because I’m interested in the conservation of the natural world.

“Amanda’s work is super significant - she is a leader in her field.”

The oceanographer is Canadian and an expert in seahorses and other similar creatures.

She was the first person to study the animals underwater, and is a professor at the University of British Columbia.

Graffiti artist Scotty, from Essex, added: “I’m thrilled I got to do this after my injury in September.

“People in Margate are really friendly and they seem to understand about ocean conservation.”

He describes his style as “bars of colour – like a glitch”.

The painting took five days to complete.

Rise Up Residency was a trail of murals around the seaside town, all relating to protecting our seas, although one mural in particular – featuring an array of graffiti-style wording and tags – got a frosty reaction from neighbours.

There are a total of 17 murals in the collection.
