A top chef behind a popular bakery café which became an overnight hit has opened another store.

Owners Stephen Gadd and Rachel Young launched Staple Stores last year in Reading Street, Broadstairs, with people regularly queuing down the street for a taste of the mouth-watering pastries and sourdough.

And now they have opened another Staple shop, this time in St Mildred's Walk in Westgate-on-Sea.

A similar set up to the Broadstairs bakery, they will serve pastries, including their much-loved cruffins, as well as other baked goods such as the Staple sourdough, focaccia, cakes and cookies.

The Westgate store, however, also has a hot food offer, although Mr Gadd says they are keeping it small, with brunch-style muffins, poached eggs, topped toast and other light bites.

"It's a really great, sunny spot," said the dad-of-three.

"We've got a bit more seating here, some more space and we're a little bit out of the way. We're really pleased to be opening up here.

"Everything, as you know, is made in-house and we'll have all the stuff we have in Reading Street but also with a hot food offer."

He admits now how surprised he was at how quickly the Broadstairs store took off.

"It just went mad. I don't think anyone could have predicted what it did," he said.

"It was just at the right time, everyone wanted something a little bit special, and we're consistent with what we offer.

"People like that consistency - they'll have a cruffin one week and it will be just as delicious as the one they had the week before."

The Staple Store organic sourdough loaf will still play a focal part of the new bakery as well as its coffee, which is supplied by Curve Coffee Roasters.

Mr Gadd has notable former workplaces under his belt, including the iconic Odettes in Primrose Hill and the two-Michelin-starred Hibiscus in Mayfair.

He is also known for his pop-up restaurants in pubs which have included the London Tavern in Margate and Neptunes Hall in Broadstairs.
