Six hundred runners from around the UK are taking part in one of the largest road races in the south east on Sunday. (Mar 1)

The Thanet Roadrunners AC 20k starts at Government Acre on Ramsgate’s Royal Esplanade and is regarded by competitors as the perfect warm up for April’s London marathon.

Thanet Roadrunner Steve Adelsberg said: "Basically, if you cannot complete 20 miles by March 1 you are likely to struggle at the London marathon five weeks later.

"Thanet has hosted this race for many years and it attracts many runners from across the UK and occasionally some from the continent.

"The race will start and finish at Government Acre. The route will be taking in such pretty areas as the Viking ship at Cliffsend, Ramsgate harbour and seafront, beautiful and acclaimed Broadstairs, Joss Bay’s surfers’ paradise, and North Foreland lighthouse to name but a few sights, before the runners return to a triumphant and well deserved finish.

"The route is a spectators dream, especially at Broadstairs as the runners will pass through Victoria Gardens above Viking Bay three times, and Ramsgate seafront twice.

"Runners and spectators are actively encouraged to get involved as are any helpers/volunteers who could marshal or help at water stations on the route."
