RAF veteran from Broadstairs reunited with beloved wife for 60th wedding anniversary

An RAF veteran kept apart from his wife due to the risk of catching Covid-19 was finally reunited with her for their 60th wedding anniversary.

Phillip Palmer lives at the Royal British Legion care home Maurice House in Broadstairs, but has been unable to see his beloved wife Norma in person throughout the pandemic.

But staff made the special visit possible so that Phillipould see Norma for the milestone, albeit through a window.

He was also able to see his daughter Helen during the emotional reunion.

Norma says it meant the world to her that she and her husband, who has been shielding since lockdown began in March, got to spend their 60th anniversary together.

"It has been difficult not being able to see him in person, but the nurses and staff here at Maurice House did everything they could to make my visit possible," she said.

Phillip added: "It was lovely seeing my wife. I love her so much."

Maurice House, in Callis Court Road, provides nursing, personal care and short-term respite care for the Armed Forces community and their families.

Tracy Tremble, care home manager, and staff wanted to do all they could to make sure the couple could celebrate their impressive diamond wedding anniversary milestone.

She said: "We are so pleased that Phillip was able to see his wife on this special anniversary.

"During the Covid-19 pandemic the safety and well-being of our residents and staff is our highest priority, and it is so important for morale that we can facilitate visits like this.

"Now more than ever it is crucial that those who have served and sacrificed for us are looked after."
