The father of 23-month-old twins who were killed by their mother has called on the Prime Minister to make sentences tougher.

Steven Ford tweeted Boris Johnson after his ex-wife Samantha Ford was sentenced to 10 years in prison. She will go to a psychiatric unit until she is well enough for jail.

Ford, from Margate, had pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter with diminished responsibility and was handed the sentence at the Old Bailey today.

He said: "Time for @BorisJohnson to step up and get a handle on tougher sentencing! 10 years for killing my son and daughter and probably only serve 5! Justice was not served today. I am devastated, disgusted and appalled."

The twins were found at their home in Castle Drive, Margate on December 27.

Ford had been involved in a car crash in the early morning and told police where they were.

Days after the incident, Mr Ford posted on Twitter: "I want the world to see my beautiful babies. Jake and Chloe forever xxx."

He had also dedicated a poem to the twins which read:

Beautiful Jake and Chloe

Every thought holds you close;

Every tear is for you both;

My two perfect souls will live on within my heart;

Jake’s laugh, Chloe’s song, beautiful smiles will never part;

Together always, forever young;

I’ll never let you go but now I set you free;

I promise to be the best man I can be;

Gone but never to be forgotten;

Jake and Chloe forever;

Daddy loves you xx
