Northdown Primary School, Margate, handed 'requires improvement' rating by Ofsted

A primary school has been told it requires improvement following its latest Ofsted inspection.

Northdown primary school, Margate, was given the rating following an inspection in November - a downgrade from their previous rating of 'good' back in 2014.

The report, published on Monday, says that pupils' behaviour is 'weak' and that they are 'easily distracted'.

It also points out that "too many pupils are not correctly identified as having special educational needs and/or disabilities" and that "they do not receive the specialist help that would enable them to succeed."

The school, which has 379 pupils, was handed the rating 'requires improvement' on four out of five areas - effectiveness of leadership and management, quality of teaching, learning and assessment, personal development, behaviour and welfare, and outcomes for pupils.

On the fifth category, early years provision, the school was rated 'good'.

Inspectors noted that pupils' progress and attainment "vary too much from year to year and class to class" and that "disadvantaged pupils lag behind their classmates".

The report also said the staff are "too often confused by what is expected of them" and "until recently, their morale was low."

The current leadership team at the school has only been in place since May this year, which the report says means "leaders have not yet had sufficient time to resolve the many issues faced by the school."

However, inspectors said that one of the school's strengths was that the leadership team "is experienced and knows what is required to improve the school."

The full report can be found on Ofsted's website.
