Around 250 competitors took part in the Thanet Coastal Marathon on Sunday which incorporated the Kent Championships.

The tough seafront course took the runners from Cliftonville via Broadstairs, Ramsgate, back to Cliftonville, out to Birchington and returning to finish a mile beyond the Turner Contemporary Gallery in Margate.

The men’s race was dominated by Orpington Road Runners who took first, second and fourth place overall.

Jason Cherriman, bronze medallist in 2010, led the race throughout and won in 2.47.54; nearly three minutes ahead of clubmate Steve Nimmo, the leading over-40.

Stuart Shields of Tunbridge Wells Harriers was sixth in 3.07.48 and clubmate Ed Peltor 16th overall in 3.19.31 – both helping their club to second place in the team event behind Orpington, with Thanet Road Runners in third.

The ladies’ race saw victory for Larkfield’s Sarah Mooney who also led from start to finish.

Mooney - who was using the race as training for next month’s Amsterdam Marathon - finished 15th overall in 3.18.37, just a minute off her personal best.

Second was Leicester-based Jay Hairsine in 3.19.47.

The ladies’ team event saw Maidstone Harriers get the verdict from Larkfield AC by three points, with Paddock Wood AC in third place.
