A marine mammal thought to be a harbour porpoise has been found dead on a beach by a dog walker.

The animal was found washed up on Stone Bay in Broadstairs at around 7.30am today.

The porpoise, which had no obvious signs of injury, was already dead so nothing could be done to save it.

According to Kent Wildlife Trust, harbour porpoises can be spotted close to shore in shallow water, especially in tidal races and around headlands.

"They are usually solitary or in small feeding groups of up to 10," the trust says.

"They are pretty shy and will avoid boats and jetskis - though they are known to be more curious in some areas around the UK."

Thanet District Council, which has responsibility for beaches, has been contacted for comment.
