Around 30 firefighters have been tackling a blaze at a waste recycling centre in Thanet since early today.

The blaze broke out at the plant, in Ramsgate Road, Sandwich, at about 3.30am.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service said six crews and support units battled the fire for several hours.

The response was scaled down to around 20 firefighters at 6.30am.

No one was hurt in the fire and the cause is under investigation.

The fire left the A256 partially blocked in both directions during the morning rush-hour, with congestion building.

Meanwhile, crews also remained at the scene of a barn fire involving 120 tonnes of straw bales that started near Sittingbourne last night.

Firefighters were called to the barn, in Blacketts Road, Tonge, at about 6.15pm.

They worked to protect properties nearby and allowed the barn to burn under controlled conditions.

People living nearby were urged to keep their windows and doors closed as a precaution.
