Specialists have been examining the roof of Margate's Turner Contemporary after damage caused by high winds forced bosses to close the popular gallery.

The striking-looking landmark building beside the harbour was battered by storm Doris yesterday in scenes of leaden skies and rough seas, ironically like the Turner paintings it has exhibited.

Yesterday morning it was shut to the public after some of its zinc roof panels were found to have lifted and fallen but has now reopened.

Roofing specialists were called in by Kent County Council today to assess the extent of the damage and carry out repairs.

They apologise for the inconvenience on the Turner Contemporary website.

Designed by architect Sir David Chipperfield, the £17.5 million gallery was opened in 2011 and has welcomed more than two million visitors.
