A teenage boy has died in a house fire on the Romney Marsh.

Around 20 firefighers were called to the blaze in Lade Fort Crescent, off Taylor Road, Lydd-on-Sea, at around 9.10am this morning (Sunday).

A mother and her five children were inside the house when the fire started in a bedroom at the front of the building.

Flames quickly took hold of the property, despite attempts from those inside to extinguish the fire themselves.

The woman and four children were able to leave the burning house but her 17-year-old son was unaccounted for when crews arrived.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus attempted to rescue the boy but he suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesperson for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said the cause of the fire was now being investigated.
