A 13-year-old boy has had a lucky escape after being rescued from a chalk pit by firefighters.

Three fire crews were called to the scene near Prestedge Avenue in Ramsgate at about 6.20pm yesterday.

A specialised rope rescue unit and technical rescue unit were among the vehicles scrambled to the site.

Crews devised a rescue plan and had to cut away at shrubbery to gain access to the pit, before lifting the boy to safety.

He had no reported injuries, and fire crews were able to leave the area by 8.30pm.

The fire service has been approached for more information.
