Man due in court after assault in Tesco Extra in Broadstairs

A man has been remanded in custody after allegedly assaulting a store worker in Broadstairs on New Year's Day.

Brett Whitehead, 45, was arrested after reportedly leaving the staff member with facial injuries at the Tesco Extra in Margate Road.

The incident happened in Tesco Extra in Broadstairs

One customer who witnessed the incident said: "Two security staff and a worker were struggling with a big aggressive bloke.

"What shocked me the most was the number of people who walked past.

"I jumped into help drag the bloke off a member of staff."

Whitehead, who is of no fixed address, was charged the following day with stealing meats from the store, threatening a person with a knife in a public place, and two counts of assault by beating.

He appeared at Medway Magistrates’ Court on Friday where he was remanded in custody.

The case will next be heard in court on a date to be confirmed.
