A toddler is in a critical but stable condition in hospital after his buggy was struck by a lorry in Margate.

The incident in St Peter’s Road at 1.35pm yesterday is believed to have happened as the two-year-old boy, his grandmother and older sister were crossing the street.

The family were taken to the nearby QEQM hospital but injuries to the boy’s pelvis, lungs, liver and spleen were so severe the youngster was taken to Kings College Hospital, London.

It is believed the buggy was caught by part of the lorry trailer but did not go under the wheels of the lorry.

His eight-year-old sister suffered bruising and his 58-year-old grandmother a broken ankle. They were treated at hospital in Margate and released yesterday evening.

A Kent Police spokesman said officers had spoken to several witnesses and that investigations continue.

The lorry driver was not injured. St Peter’s Road was closed for around two hours after the incident.
