Margate Town Read finale

Young people from Margate breathed life into a story that celebrates the folklore and legends of their town at the historic Theatre Royal.

The spotlight fell on students from Hartsdown Academy who performed a short play as the centrepiece of the finale for the Margate Town Read project.

The work was specially written for the occasion by award-winning author Geraldine McCaughrean whose latest acclaimed story The Positively Last performance is centred on the seaside town of Seashaw(Margate) and its inhabitants of yesteryear and today, with the Royal Theatre, its ghosts and its future the fulcrum of the plot.

Speaking from the stage at the theatre where much of her tale is set, she said: “The enthusiasm, interest and support from the people of Margate of all ages for the Town Read project and for my book has been overwhelming."
