Cannabis resin with an estimated street value of £3 million has been seized at Port Ramsgate.

UK Border Agency officers are investigating after approximately one tonne of the drug was uncovered on Thursday on an Irish-registered lorry carrying mushroom compost.

It had arrived on a ferry from Ostend in Belgium at 2.45pm.

A 25 year-old man - a UK national - was arrested and is being interviewed by UK Border Agency investigation officers.

Malcolm Bragg, the UK Border Agency's Criminal and Financial Assistant Director, said: "Our officers work tirelessly to detect and prevent drugs from being smuggled into the UK.

"We are determined to prevent this terrible trade which can have such a destructive impact on the lives of so many."

Anyone with information about activity they suspect may be linked to drug smuggling should call the agency hotline on 0800 59 5000.
