A woman suffered life-threatening injuries after being hit by a car which failed to stop near a junction in Margate.

The 87-year-old pedestrian was in the crash on Northdown Road, near the junction with Holly Lane, at around 5.15pm yesterday.

The driver of the car - a burgundy Ford Fiesta - didn't stop, and police later found a similar vehicle in Alfred Road.

The injured woman, from Margate, was taken by ambulance to William Harvey Hospital, before being transferred to a London hospital with injuries described as life-threatening.

She is still critical in hospital today.

Det Sgt Scott Lynch, of the Kent Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "This collision happened at a busy time of the day and is likely to have been witnessed by a significant number of pedestrians and other road users.

"I would urge anyone with information to contact police."

A 20-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man, both from Margate, have been arrested in connection with the crash.

Both have both been bailed until next February for further enquiries.
