An aspiring hip hop rapper has got more than 19,000 YouTube hits on his new mix tape in under three weeks.

With the stage name Abacus - because 'not every rapper is good at maths' - Joseph Duckworth is aiming to inspire.

The 21-year-old from Tonbridge could no longer take 60 hour weeks as a kitchen porter and so last year, decided to start producing music full-time.

His mix tape, Humanity, has 12 tracks, each of which has got more than 1500 views since the release date, February 22.

The ex-Hillview School sixth form student said: "Up until I was 20 I wanted to have my own business but recently, I have been taking music a lot more seriously."

Mr Duckworth lives with his older brother, Toby, who is currently completing an engineering degree. Their mother passed away in 2017 from cancer, which had a profound effect on Mr Duckworth's music.

"My mum was very supportive of my music at the time, however there was only so much she heard, because I started doing a lot more after she passed. It had a big influence on my music."

Inspired by hip hop artists such as Lowkey and Akala, the Hildenborough rapper has been writing lyrics since he was 14.

Hoping to begin performing live soon, Mr Duckworth has been working hard to promote his music, recently completing a three-day marketing course and invested in new recording equipment.

He added: "Being rich and famous is not my overall goal, I would just like to build up enough of a fan base to support myself."
