Cannabis lollipops that were on sale in a high street supermarket have been removed from the shelves after they were deemed inappropriate.

The green sweets, named after the class B drug, were on sale at the Londis store in Tonbridge High Street this week.

But when head office discovered the franchised store was selling the lollies, they were quickly removed from the shop.

A spokesman for Booker Group PLC, which handles PR for Londis, said: "Londis confirms the reported cannabis lollipops are not a product that it would supply to any of its stores.

"The retailer has considered whether stocking this product is appropriate and as result, has removed the product from sale with immediate effect."

The lollies can be bought online from a Dutch company called Holland Headshop, which sells a tub of 10 for €7.50 (about £6.20).

According to the firm, the sweets contain hemp, a variety of the cannabis plant that contains less of the psychoactive drug tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) than recreational cannabis.

Hemp can be grown legally in the UK if the grower purchases a licence from the government.

The spokesman added: "Londis operates from an estate of fully independent stores across the UK, as such Londis High Street Tonbridge is an independently owned and operated convenience store.

"The retailer therefore is able to purchase stock from any wholesaler, and sell products of their personal choice."
