Drivers were left fuming after an open pothole damaged their cars over the weekend.

Highways England confirmed it was aware motorists had faced punctures while driving along the A21 near Tonbridge on Sunday.

But despite receiving an initial report at 11am, repairs didn't get underway until 7.30pm.

Angered motorists took to Twitter to vent their frustrations, with one saying: "This is the 4th time this month! @HighwaysSEAST@KentHighways is it ever going to be fixed or do we just wait for a fatality?"

Highways England told the motorist: "We make every effort to fix defects on the motorway and trunk roads but they can re-occur for many reasons beyond our control."

Following the arrival of maintenance crews, one lane was closed from 7.31pm until repairs were completed at 9.30pm.

Highways England did not give a reason for the eight hour response time, but said it was aware of a "couple of punctures".

Earlier this month, we revealed one in seven motorists receive compensation for pothole damage.
