DETECTIVES investigating the death of a 46-year-old man in a suspicious fire at his home will carry out road checks in the area a week after the incident.

John Skilton suffered horrific burns in the blaze at his flat in Bridge Close, Tonbridge, in the early hours of the morning on Sunday, January 21.

He died in the burns unit at the Queen Victoria Hospital at East Grinstead in West Sussex on Monday afternoon.

Kent Police is treating Mr Skilton's death as murder and on Saturday night and into the early hours of Sunday officers will be carrying out road checks and talking to people walking through the area to see if they were there on the night of the fire.

Police conducted house-to-house enquiries in the neighbourhood on Thursday.

Det Ch Insp Mick Atkinson said: "People may not realise that something they've seen or heard can be an important piece of the jigsaw.

"The checks that will be happening on Saturday night mean we can capture this information."

A 28-year old man arrested in connection with the fire was released without charge. He was questioned by detectives on suspicion of arson.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police in the incident room on 01622 654860 or Kent Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
