A stabbing victim died of injuries to his lungs, an inquest heard.

Thomas Waugh, who was 20, was found by a passer-by slumped against a wall and lying on the pavement in Avebury Avenue, Tonbridge.

An inquest opened into his death this morning heard the witness called for an ambulance and attempted CPR until paramedics arrived after raising the alarm at 12.55am on the morning of Friday, August 19.

They found Mr Waugh was bleeding from a wound in the chest and also had a laceration across the left side of his face.

They continued CPR but were unable to save him. He was declared dead at the scene at 1.34am.

Coroner Alan Blunsdon said a post mortem examination determined the cause of death as a stab wound to the left lung and noted that a murder investigation was under way.

Mr Waugh, who was born in Tunbridge Wells, was single and employed as catering assistant. He had been living at The Drive in Tonbridge.

Mr Blundson adjourned the full hearing until December 1 at County Hall warning that the date was subject to the progress of the police investigation.

Officers have charged two people with the murder – a 17-year-old boy, from Coulsdon, and a 16-year-old boy, from Tonbridge. Both are still in police custody and no date for their trials has been set.

They are also charged with the attempted robbery of Mr Waugh, as well as an additional count of robbery in relation to two men who had been with Mr Waugh prior to the attack.

A 16-year-old girl, who was originally arrested on suspicion of murder, and a woman, aged 47, who was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, have been released on bail until November 21.

The incident provoked a huge police presence in Avebury Avenue at the time.
