Tonbridge boss Steve McKimm told players his job is on the line after a fifth defeat in six matches.

He intends to make changes, with club captain and centre-half Jerrome Sobers the first man released following a 2-1 FA Trophy defeat by Kingstonian on Tuesday night.

Angels led the second qualifying round replay through Nathan Elder before conceding twice in a matter of minutes.

There’s no pressure from the board – but McKimm is taking no chances.

He said: “I can’t say a bad word about Jerrome. He’s been excellent for me for two-and-a-half years but I need to freshen things up a bit.

“Some people might like the changes, some might not, but my job’s on the line and I said to the players I’m going to do what I can to keep myself in a job.

“There’s no pressure from the board, it’s pressure I put on myself. Whether they say I’m safe or not, we’ve lost five matches out of six and you can’t keep losing games because the season fizzles out.

“It’s a results business and I can’t keep making excuses about injuries or players not listening because then all that happens is the board say ‘why aren’t they listening and why don’t you change it?’

“I’m taking the first steps to make a couple of changes. I might be doing the wrong thing – time will tell – but I’ve always been a person who lives and dies by my decisions.

“Nobody’s happy losing games but the buck stops with me because I’m in charge.

“If you keep losing games then, at some point, you’ve got to be looking down the barrel.”
