A bolt of lightning during thundery weather today saw a roof go up in flames.

Firefighters were called to the property in Speldhurst Hill in Speldhurst, near Tunbridge Wells, this afternoon after the freak occurrence caused smoke to billow from the home.

Six fire engines in all were sent to the house shortly after 2pm, where crews used ladders to reach the blaze and put out the flames.

No one was hurt in the fire, which Kent Fire and Rescue Service believe was started when the property was hit by lightning.

The fire happened on a day of unsettled weather across Kent, with spells of sunshine broken by thundery showers.
