Tunbridge Wells MP Greg Clark has had uncertainty about his position within the Conservative party settled.

He was one of 21 rebel MPs who were suspended after failing to support the government over its Brexit deal and there were reports he could have been at risk of being deselected.

At the time, he said that he realised he could pay a price for his decision tweeting he was aware there could be personal consequences for his political career.

Explaining his decision not to support the government, he tweeted: "As a former Business Secretary I know the harm that an abrupt no-deal Brexit would do to our country and to my constituents.

"Parliament must be able to prevent that harm. So I voted for the legislation tonight, fully aware of the personal consequences."

There were reports he could have faced a vote of no confidence by Brexiteers who were members of his constituency but that came to nothing.

The move to restore the whip means that Mr Clark can now be reselected as the candidate for the forthcoming election.

His vote could also prove crucial in tonight's vote as Boris Johnson seeks to hold a general election in December.
