Tributes have been paid to a much loved war veteran who was killed after being hit by a van in Southborough.

Originally from Bury in Greater Manchester, Ted Barlow, 95, had lived in the town since 1999.

Today his family issued a tribute saying: "Ted served in the RAF in North Africa and Italy in the Second World War after graduating from Cambridge University.

Mr Barlow died at the scene following a collision on Monday, which involved a white Ford Transit van.

Police, paramedics and air ambulance were called to A26 London Road in Southborough shortly before 10.30am.

It happened near the junction with Springfield Road by Tesco.

The road was shut in both directions so the air ambulance could land and drivers were advised to use other routes.

It reopened nearly five hours later, after officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit had carried out their initial enquiries.
