Pioneer project to woo teachers

A PROJECT to counter a “brain drain” of teachers from Kent is being pioneered in Tunbridge Wells.

Kent County Council has teamed up with the Moat Housing Group to launch a scheme aimed at attracting teachers to the region.

An application has been submitted to build 10 environmentally-friendly apartments on KCC-owned land at Tunbridge Wells High School.

It would mean eight one-bedroom and two, two-bedroom homes being made available for newly qualified or recruited teachers nominated by the county council. Teachers would be offered the homes at rents below private sector rates, making it easier for teachers to gain a foothold in an otherwise expensive area for housing.

The scheme is the first of several planned throughout Kent which could result in more than 100 additional new homes for county education staff.

Information for teachers on how to apply for one of the new homes will be available later, once a completion date is known.
