A Tunbridge Wells hair salon welcomed a surprisingly foxy customer.

Staff and customers alike were shocked to see a six-week old fox cub wander into Binfields Hairdressing in Silverdale Road.

It is not known where he came from but RSPCA staff said he was very lucky to be alive.

Owner of the salon, Sarah Smith, said she often gets people coming in wanting a 'foxy' haircut but was surprised to get this unexpected visitor.

She said: "It's not the sort of client I normally see. The little thing rushed into the salon and hid behind a filing cabinet.

"We weren't sure what it was originally because I just got a glimpse of something going past.

"He was in the salon for a couple of hours before the RSPCA came. It was a big surprise.

"We had the door open because it was hot. Usually we get cats come in, never had a fox though. It was the smallest cub I've ever seen."

The RSPCA collected the mammal and took him to a nearby wildlife specialist where he will be cared for until he is old enough to survive in the wild on his own.

Inspector Rachel Smith said: "We have no idea how this little animal came to get separated from his mum, but as we could not see her nearby, and it was quite a main road, we could not leave him there.

"I don't know how he managed to survive with the busy roads around.

"This little fox was so tiny he must have been very young - probably just a few weeks old. Far too little to be able to survive on his own.

"The salon staff and customers were brilliant. When he ran in they turned off all the hairdryers and went very quiet. There was nowhere obvious that he had come from so they had to call us to come and collect him."

Sarah, who recently moved from Tunbridge Wells to Crowborough, has owned Binfield Hairdressing for 15 years.
