Villagers have taken to the streets over proposed development in Headcorn.

Around 300 people are protesting today over Maidstone Borough Council's Local Plan proposals which according to residents would result in “irresponsible building and urbanisation” if implemented.

UKIP Cllr Christine Edwards-Daem, who organised the protest, said that it was about a range of issues including a failure to respect the village's proposed Neigbourhood Plan.

Cllr Edwards-Daem said: “The fundamental concerns and objections relate to enhanced flood risk to the community and inadequate infrastructure. MBC appear to be granting consent to proceed without plans in place to protect the community. As such it represents neglect.”

The protest corresponded with Maidstone Borough Council officials visiting the village's farmers market to discuss proposals.

Around 300 residents turned up to protest the plans this morning

Currently 425 new homes are proposed for the village but residents say this could rise to as many as 1,000 as the area is 'earmarked' for development.

Neighbourhood Plans have been encouraged by Cllr David Burton, the cabinet member responsible for planning, as a way of engaging with local communities.
