A fun-filled day of festivities will be highlighted with a tradition started more than 400 years ago.

The day at Chilham Castle on Saturday, July 1, includes the Chilham Chase, a race started by the castle’s original owner, Sir Dudley Digges, 401 years ago.

The fun run will be open for teams of two or more, with the option of running in fancy dress – most seem to prefer that option! Participants will be jumping over horse hurdles, doing a sack race and more.

There will also be live music, a bouncy castle and lawn games, classic car and bird of prey displays and a costume exhibition.

And they're off! The Chilham Chase will follow the Shakespeare performances Picture: Paul Amos

Hear the jazz vocals of Sarah-Jane Hassell in Javajam and feel-good numbers from the Maida Vales and the Chillbillies, all of whom will keep you dancing on the castle’s lawn until late.
