Maidstone-based theatre company Changeling have announced the two plays they will perform across the county in the summer of 2019.

Their open air shows last summer - William Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure and Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit - were seen by some 5,000 people during at venues including Leeds Castle, Folkestone Amphitheatre, Margate Beach and Rochester Castle.

After a poll among audience members last year, the choices for next summer will be Shakespeare's The Winters Tale and Nell Gwynn, by Jessica Swale.

The Changeling Theatre's official poster for The Winter's Tale is unconventional

The Winters Tale - announced with an eye-catching upside down poster - is a fairy story set in Sicily and Bohemia. Leontes has everything a man could want - wealth, power, a family that loves him and friends. But he is not at peace.

Inside he harbours a bitter jealousy that drives him to destroy all he holds dear. Many years later, in a distant country, a journey begins that may ultimately heal his pain and reunite his family.

But, in keeping with the theatre company's skill for innovative settings, it will incorporate the music of ABBA into the staging, music and costumes.

The Changeling Theatre's shows for 2019 include Nell Gwynn

Musical comedy Nell Gwynn was a smash hit at the Globe in London.

Set in London in 1660, King Charles II has exploded onto the scene with the love of all things loud, extravagant and sexy. And at Drury Lane a young Nell Gwynn is causing stirrings among the theatregoers.

Last year's Changeling Theatre show Measure for Measure

Nell Gwynn charts the rise of an unlikely heroine, from her roots in Coal Yard Alley, to her success as Britain’s most celebrated actress, and her hard won place in the heart of the King.

It will be the company's 22nd touring year. Venues, which range from castles and parks to beaches and stately homes, will be announced in the New Year.
