A swashbuckling adventure comes to the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury in the form of ballet. Dancers from Northern Ballet will be returning to the theatre to perform The Three Musketeers next week.

The spirited adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ famous novel is being staged for the first time in more than 10 years and has never before been performed in the city.

Choreographed by David Nixon OBE, it opens on Halloween - Wednesday, October 31 - and is set in 17th century Paris.

The mood is tense as d’Artagnan and the Three Musketeers embark on an action-packed quest to save the Queen’s reputation and the life of d’Artagnan’s love.

In a whirlwind of adventure, romance and intrigue, the rip-roaring ballet has a classic love story at its heart.

Last performed in the UK in 2007, it is set to a score composed by Sir Malcolm Arnold and played live by Northern Ballet Sinfonia. It was also nominated for an Olivier Award in 2008 and won the award for Best Dance at the MEN Theatre Awards.

Dancer Kevin Poeung said: “I was a little surprised to be cast as d’Artagnan because I am quite a short dancer and a main role like this is often given to taller dancers - but I am delighted. I really like the story, there is everything in it - love, drama, friendship, action. But what I like the most in the story is the adventure and excitement. The ballet is so action-packed - it’s filled with exciting dancing and comedic moments. My favourite moments during the rehearsal period have been working on the fighting!”
