The staging of the iconic musical was first conceived by Cameron Mackintosh in 2009 to celebrate its 25th anniversary, and will be showing at the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury next year.

Set in 19th century Paris, the musical is a story of love, politics and justice, culminating in the 1832 Rebellion and includes songs from I Dreamed a Dream to On My Own and Do You Hear the People Sing?

The second longest running West End show, Les Misérables has been seen by more than 120 million people worldwide in 52 countries and in 22 languages.

It was also made into a movie - filmed at the Historic Dockyard Chatham in 2012 and starring Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe - and the production coming to Canterbury will be inspired by this.

Originally touring the UK throughout 2009 and 2010, the new staging comes to the Marlowe from Friday, September 25 to Saturday, October 24, 2020.

Marlowe chief executive, Deborah Shaw, said: "We are thrilled to be working with Cameron Mackintosh for the first time, to present this musical phenomenon at the Marlowe.

"It will be one of the biggest productions we’ve ever staged here - and a real treat for Kent audiences. This production, based on the novel by Victor Hugo, is inspired the hugely successful movie version starring Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway and Eddie Redmayne. "

Les Miserables will be coming to the county

Scenery is inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo, and has to date already been seen in countries including North America, Brazil, Mexico, Korea and Japan.
