Stranded buses in Whitstable freed by good Samaritans

A father and son helped free two double-decker buses that became stuck in snow outside their home this morning.

The Stagecoach buses, on the number five route, were unable to make it up a slight incline in Swallow Avenue.

Mark Stubbs, executive chef at Wheelers Oyster Bar in Whitstable High Street, and his dad Mick grabbed shovels and buckets, and went to rescue the buses and stranded passengers.

The first bus became stuck just after 10am

Mr Stubbs senior explained: "We have about two inches of snow here, and there's ice underneath.

"We saw the first bus get stuck, so my son and I took grit from a yellow grit bin, and shovelled it around the wheels.

"Another bus came along behind it and got stuck too, but eventually we freed them and they managed to go back the way they came."

Stagecoach spokesman Matthew Maytum said: "Route five is currently suspended due to the road conditions. We're hoping to resume service later today, but we recommend people check our Twitter feed or contact our customer services call centre for the latest information."
