An investigation is underway after a plane lost power and crashed on the outskirts of Whitstable, leaving six people injured.

The Piper light aircraft was en route to France when its engine failed just before 10.30am yesterday.

The pilot narrowly cleared the sea wall and come down in a field of wheat off Faversham Road, Seasalter.

Police, fire and ambulance crews raced to the scene but no one was seriously hurt.

They were joined by the Sheppey Coastguard Team who sent photos of the crash site to the Aeronautical Rescue Centre in Fareham, Hampshire, then stood down.

David Oakley was at Seasalter Sailing Club with his family when he saw the plane go overhead.

He said: "I saw the aircraft glide very low past our sailing club at Seasalter and didn't think much more of it until I saw the landing gear come down. At that point, I knew something was wrong.

"The plane just cleared the sea wall before ditching into the field behind the Sportsman pub so I called 999."

Emergency services remained on scene until the Civil Aviation Authority Crash Investigation team could attend.
