A junction in Ashford which was blighted by three crashes in just over a week is set to be improved following the death of a driver in his 50s.

Anxious residents called on Kent County Council (KCC) to review the safety of the crossroads at Ashford Road, Magpie Hall Road and Steeds Lane in Kingsnorth after a series of crashes late last year.

Highways bosses have now agreed to take action following the death of the man who was involved in an accident on Monday, December 2.

The crash victim, who was in his 50s and from Sevenoaks, was airlifted to King’s College Hospital but died last month.

Police arrested a 33-year-old man shortly after the crash, and he remains under investigation for driving while disqualified and driving without a licence.

The county council - which initially said the accidents were down to “driver behaviour” rather than the safety of the road - is now looking to roll out a scheme to improve the safety of the route.

It will involve refreshing road markings to highlight the junction and installing additional signs.

A KCC spokesman said: “Following analysis of collisions at the Magpie Hall Road junction with Ashford Road in Kingsnorth, we are looking to implement an improvement scheme to better highlight the junction to approaching traffic.

“We are currently awaiting a programme date to start this work, which will include refreshing the lines and additional signage.

“We will continue to monitor the site and investigate other improvements available and implement those if, when and where required.”
