A lorry became stuck in grass on the central reservation on the M20 after the driver took evasive action to avoid a broken down car.
Motorists faced long delays on the London-bound stretch between junctions 9 for Ashford and 8 for Hollingbourne.
The incident happened in the roadworks at about 9.45am and traffic was brought to a halt.
Drivers were warned of severe delays after nine miles of congestion built up, but traffic was released at about 2pm following recovery of the lorry.
