The third phase of a building project will see a range of 34 new council homes built on the site of disused garages and a council depot.

Dartford council is consulting on proposals to build four new council home sites, three of which will be based in Swanscombe.

The design by OSG Architects include 31 new social homes to be built on the site of unused garages located at Gilbert Close, Keary Road and Milton Road.

The majority of the garages were in a poor state of repair and have now been demolished.

Proposed redevelopment of the largest site, Gilbert Close will provide a mix of 14 flats and two houses with bin and cycle storage and communal garden areas.

The socially rented homes will range in size from storey blocks of 1-2 bedroom flats to one bed bungalows and three bed houses.

Changes will also be made to provide off-street parking, improved access to the allotments and a one way road system to ease traffic congestion.

The second and third sites located in Milton Road and Keary Road will provide seven and six new homes respectively.

A fourth site is proposed to redevelop an old council depot on Mead Crescent in Dartford.

The site, located on the Tree Estate, will include three separate one bed bungalows with private garden space and off street parking intended for use by older people.

Council Leader Jeremy Kite said: “I’m very proud that Dartford is one of those councils that’s investing in new social housing. It’s important that when an area grows it isn’t just for those who can afford modern housing prices.

"Communities depend on all sorts of people making every day contributions and it’s crucial that they can expect decent housing in which to build good lives.”

Two public consultation events took place at the Heritage Halls in Swanscombe last week.

Local residents are invited to submit their views as part of the consultation process online by 6 September.
